About the Council

The Calorie Control Council, established in 1966, is an international association representing the low-calorie and reduced-fat food and beverage industry.  Today it represents 30 manufacturers and suppliers of low-calorie, low-fat and light foods and beverages, including the manufacturers and suppliers of more than two dozen different dietary sweeteners, fat replacers, fibers and other low-calorie ingredients.

The Council seeks to provide an effective channel of communication among its members, the public and government officials, and to assure that scientific, medical and other pertinent research and information is developed and made available to all interested parties.  As part of this objective, careful attention to scientific research has been a cornerstone of the Council since its founding.  The Council has sponsored numerous studies on low-calorie ingredients, foods and beverages—including investigations of ingredient safety, consumer usage and public opinion.

The Council has fostered the communication of information on the importance of diet, physical activity and weight control in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Consumers will benefit from a better understanding of the importance of reducing calorie and fat intake and increasing caloric expenditure as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.

Based on a thorough review of the scientific evidence, the Council supports the continued availability of acesulfame potassium, aspartame, cyclamate, neotame, saccharin, stevia sweeteners and sucralose, as food ingredients.  The Council also supports the approval of alitame, the reapproval of cyclamate in the U.S. and the continued availability of current fat replacers and reduced-calorie sweeteners.  The approval of additional safe low-calorie sweeteners, fat replacers and other dietary ingredients for those wanting or needing them is encouraged.  The Council supports the availability of a wide variety of safe low-calorie ingredients.  The public is best served by having a variety of low-calorie ingredients, with each allowed to find its most effective role in the marketplace.
